Celebrating Christmas
Christmas Day is a holiday in many countries, but
not all. It is a special time when children receive gifts from family, friends
and Santa Claus or Father Christmas. Christmas cards are also given before
Christmas. Some workplaces have Christmas parties before December 25. Festive
activities include exchanging gifts, singing Christmas carols, going to parties.
Many homes put up Christmas trees and other decorations in the weeks leading up to Christmas Day. For some, Christmas is a special family affair, while others invite friends over for a Christmas buffet or pot luck meal. Churches hold special services and may include a crèche or a miniature Christmas scene.

About Christmas Day Christmas
Jesus
Christ whom Christians believe to be the Son of God.
His date of birth is unknown as
little information is available about his early life. Scholars differ on when Jesus was born. Christians
celebrate Jesus’ birthday on December 25. Orthodox Christians celebrate
Christmas on or around January 7.
The word “Christmas” comes
from the Old English “Cristes maesse” or mass of Christ. Perhaps
the Christmas date of December 25 was chosen to celebrate
Saturnalia and Natalis Invicti. It is also possible that
the celebration of the birth of the “Light of the World” was set in December
because this is when the days begin to lengthen in the Northern Hemisphere.
